How it works

Four simple steps, start to sent.

We guide every stage — then check your signed forms before you post them, so a small mistake never costs you months.

1

2

Print and sign

We include a step-by-step signing checklist so you sign in the right order — the mistakes that cause delays, avoided.

Why make an LPA?

1 in 3 of us will lose capacity at some point. Without an LPA, even your spouse can’t act for you.

3 to fix
  • Section 11 · AttorneyNeeds fixing

An attorney has signed before your certificate provider. Signatures must be dated in order — you, then your certificate provider, then your attorneys.

  • Section 9 · WitnessNeeds fixing

Your witness's address looks incomplete. The OPG needs their full name and address next to the signature.

  • Section 14 · RegistrationWorth a look

No payment method is ticked for the registration fee. Worth a quick check before you post.

An example check — mark each item to watch it resolve.

The OPG registration fee is separate. Every LPA must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian, which charges a statutory fee of £92.00 per LPA (effective 17 November 2025) when you post your signed forms. This fee goes to the government, not SmartLPA.

You may pay less, or nothing. If the donor’s gross annual income is under £12,000, a 50% reduction applies (£46 per LPA). If the donor receives certain means-tested benefits, the fee may be waived entirely (£0) using form LPA120, submitted with the LPA at registration. We’ll help you check — this is an estimate, and the OPG decides based on your application and supporting evidence.
